About Steve

The story behind the work.

Steve Duke's perspective was shaped in two very different business worlds, followed by an exit he did not plan.

Steve Duke

Founder and creator of Lucensys™

Running a successful company and building one whose value can survive the owner are not necessarily the same thing.

Steve spent nearly three decades inside major corporations, including General Electric Aerospace, Lockheed Martin, and General Dynamics. His leadership roles included financial responsibility for projects and business units, including a multimillion-dollar business unit.

Then he left the corporate world to start and run a smaller business of his own. That experience changed how he understood business value, owner dependence, and the difference between earning income and building a transferable asset.

Two business worlds

Systems allow an organization to operate beyond one person. Owner dependence keeps too much of the business tied to one person.

Large organizations taught Steve the value of clear accountability, capable teams, and consistent execution. Small business ownership showed him what happens when the owner must supply much of that system personally.

The owner may carry the important customer relationships, make the difficult decisions, solve the unusual problems, and fill whatever gap appears next. The company can be profitable while much of what keeps it successful remains tied to one person.

The exit he did not plan

Every owner eventually has to find out what remains without them.

Circumstances eventually forced Steve to step away from his business. The experience made one question personal: did the owner build a source of income, or an asset capable of supporting whatever comes next?

His work around owners, buyers, growth, business transitions, and mergers and acquisitions reinforced the same lesson. Buyers look past revenue and profit to ask what happens to customers, operating knowledge, decision-making, and performance after the owner leaves.

Where the work led

Ideas, books, and a practical operating system.

Failure to Exit! examined why owners often reach a transition without enough business or personal preparation. Built for Options, now in development, asks what owners can build earlier while they still have choices.

Lucensys puts that thinking into practice by helping owners find where dependence, hidden risk, and execution weakness are limiting transferability, then decide what to strengthen next.

Education and professional development

A technical, business, and transaction perspective.

Steve is a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, where he earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He also earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Vermont and a Master of Business Administration from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, The Lally School of Management and Technology.

His professional training and certifications span business growth, value building, exit planning, and mergers and acquisitions. Those disciplines support the work; they do not define it. The central question remains how to build a company that gives its owner better choices.
